Sportsmetrics

Why Sportsmetrics?

Cincinnati SportsMedicine’s Sportsmetrics™, the training program scientifically proven to increase jump height and reduce the risk of serious knee injury! What is Sportsmetrics™? Dr. Frank Noyes and the doctors and researchers at Cincinnati SportsMedicine Research and Education Foundation have been leaders in developing programs to ensure athletes play well and stay well. Sportsmetrics™ is a scientifically proven, six-week jump training program that incorporates proper stretching, special plyometric exercises and weight training. It focuses on developing overall leg strength as well as improving balance in strength from the front to the back of the thigh. Through specialized progression of jump/plyometric drills, athletes learn proper techniques for jumping and landing; increase overall leg strength; improve symmetry in right-to-left leg power and improve vertical jump.

Sportsmetrics™ training consists of five components:

1. Dynamic Warm-up: The dynamic warm-up prepares the body for training with functional based activities that use sport specific motions. It raises core body temperature, increases blood flow to the muscles and improves flexibility, balance and co-ordination. After completing this warm-up, the athlete will be physically prepared for training.

2. Plyometrics/Jump Training: The core of the Sportsmetrics™ program, plyometrics are used with focus on correct jumping tech-nique and are divided into three, two-week phases. Each two-week phase has a different training focus and the exercises change correspondingly. Plyometrics develop muscle control and strength critical for reducing the risk of knee injury and also for increasing jump height.

3. Speed, Agility, and Conditioning: With emphasis on body alignment and technique, Sportsmetrics™ provides structured speed, agility, and conditioning guidance. A combination of agility, speed, and conditioning drills are used to focus on development of endurance, explosive power and improved technique.

4. Strength Training: The strength portion of Sportsmetrics™ has been redesigned to incorporate a full range of exercises for increasing muscle as well as conditioning the body. The program can be incorporated with machine weights or with the use of body weight. This program focuses on core stability and upper and lower body improvement.

5. Flexibility: Stretching is essential to achieve maximum muscle length to allow muscles to work with power through complete range of motion. This is important for decreasing injury and post-training muscle soreness. Like the rest of the training components in Sportsmetrics™, stretches are performed as part of the training session.

Transformers

The Transformers program is a fun fitness training program geared toward children who want or need to get fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. Transformers is two-for-one program designed to rehab an injury and get the child on the right track.

In this four to six week program, the child will learn how to exercise properly, the importance of posture and strengthening their muscles, basic nutrition, and how to make healthy food choices. We partnered with a licensed nutritionist to create basic eating guidelines for parents to easily adjust into their family’s lifestyle. Also, the nutritionist will be on-call to answer questions and offer expert advice.

Many times, parents find it hard to get a child involved in activities that are tailored toward losing weight or becoming healthy. So, how do we get the kids interested and motivated? Accountability and rewards. After the child completes their home exercises, we ask the parent to sign off on the home exercise log. If the child completes all their exercises for the week, they get to choose a prize from our Transformers treasure chest. Not only that, the child will receive encouraging words from our expert staff every step of the way. We also encourage parents to adapt these lifestyle changes and have the entire family on board. This creates consistency for the child and eliminates any potential roadblocks. Once the child has graduated from the Transformers program, they will receive a home exercise program easy enough for children to understand and do on their own to ensure they are transformed for life.

For more information about the program, please contact your nearest APTC clinic.

* If a child does not have an injury but would like to participate in the Transformers program, we do have a pay-out-of-pocket option.
